| At UL Lafayette, there are four research review committees that responsible for compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and are charged with ensuring the protection of researchers and the subjects of research at the University. The four committees are: | ||||||||||||||||||||

| As a UL Lafayette faculty member, it is your responsibility to submit
an application to the appropriate review committee if your research involves
human subjects, non-human animal subjects, radiation/radioactive materials
or biohazards. Review committee applications should be submitted at the
proposal stage when applying for external funding. Approval from the appropriate
committee must also be obtained when conducting unfunded or internally funded
research projects. Approval for a research study is typically granted by each committee for a period of one year. If a research study it to continue pass the one year approval period, it is the responsibility of the PI to seek renewal prior to the expiration of the approval. A brief description of each of the four committees and contact information for the committee chairpersons appears below. | Institutional Review Board (IRB) Dr. Evelyn Wills, Chair Phone: (337) 482-5607 Email: emw8292@louisiana.edu The Institutional Review Board (UL Lafayette IRB) functions to assure that research involving human subjects is carried out in an ethical manner. All individuals conducting research that involves human subjects are expected to have their research proposal reviewed by the UL Lafayette Institutional Review Board (IRB). In addition, all researchers involved in human subjects research at the University of Louisiana Lafayette are required to be trained in the protection of human subjects. | Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Dr. Dana Hasselschwert, Chair Phone: (337) 482-0204 Email: dlh8344@louisiana.edu IACUC Coordinator: Dr. Robin Broussard, Phone: 482-1419 The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is charged with overseeing the institution's animal program, facilities, and procedures. All research, teaching and testing activities involving live vertebrate animals must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC prior to initiation of the activities. To ensure compliance with USDA regulations and the recommendations of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette requires that all faculty and staff conducting research utilizing live animals participate in an online training program. | Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Dr. Paul Klerks, Chair Dr. Don Ennis, Biosafety Officer Phone: (337) 482-6356 Phone: (337) 482-5008 Email: klerks@louisiana.edu Email: dge5893@louisiana.edu The Institutional Biosafety Committee at UL Lafayette provides guidance to University researchers who use biological agents or recombinant DNA within the scope of their work. The mission of the IBC is to ensure that research involving biological agents is conducted within existing Federal and State laws and guidelines that aim to protect the safety of workers, the general public, and the environment. Projects on campus that involve recombinant DNA and biological agents require the approval of the IBC before the research can be undertaken. As PI, you should check with the Committee if you believe that your research might require Committee approval. If your research is covered, you must submit proposed protocols to the Committee and gain the Committee’s approval before undertaking your research. | University Radiation Safety Committee (URC) Joey Pons, Chair Dr. Gary Glass, RSO Phone: (337) 482-5357 Phone: (337) 482-6184 Email: safetyman@louisiana.edu Email: glass@louisiana.edu UL Lafayette is authorized to utilize radioactive materials and operate various sources of radiation. The university's license is one of broad scope designed to provide the greatest possible flexibility in the exercise of its research mission. The university is required to establish administrative controls and provisions relating to procedures, record keeping and accounting and management review. Thus, the University has established a Radiation Safety Committee whose primary responsibility is to oversee and ensure (1) the adequacy of facilities and equipment, (2) the training and experience of users, (3) the maintenance of operating, handling procedures and record keeping, (4) the maintenance of the University Radiation Safety and Operations Manual, and (5) the review and approval of all protocols for use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment at the University.
